Duncan Charles Mace was born in Tuddenham in 1888 (Mildenhall Q2-1888 4A:736). Illegitimate, his parentage is completely
unknown without his birth certificate.
1891 census...Aged 3, Charles MACE was at Cottage, The Street, Tuddenham, boarding with William CLARKE [53] married, labourer, and his daughter Alberta [7], both born Tuddenham 1901 census...Aged 13, a pauper, he was in the Workhouse, Mildenhall. 1911 census...Aged 23, he was a private in the 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, in Egypt. Duncan does appear to be a lonely man but he did name a Miss Riddlestone, Coram Street, Hadleigh as his sole legatee. Nothing has been found to identify his parents. |

He enlisted in Mildenhall. "Soldiers Died" has him dying in Salonika whereas CWGC have him buried in France. The medal rolls have him in the 2nd Battalion. He was in France on the 15th August 1914 which was when the 2nd Battalion reached France. As the 1st battalion went to Egypt in October 1915 and never came back to Europe during the rest of the war, Duncan must have been transferred to them later on.
Tourlaville was used by hospitals on the French coast. His Army service records have not been found , however the following appeared in the Bury Free Press of 31st August 1918 MILDENHALL The death occurred on August 9th, of pneumonia, in Cherbourg Hospital,on his way home from Salonika after three years and five months absence on active service, of 7126 Sergt. Duncan Mace, Suffolk Regiment, of Mildenhall.
